As reported by the AP Wire, Former U.S. Representative Gerry Studds dies at age 69.  Rep. Studds, Democrat from Massachusetts, was the first OPENLY gay person elected to Congress.  According to his HUSBAND, Dean Hara, Rep. Studds collasped while walking his dog. 

The reason for posting this message here in our blog is to point out how far our community has come.  A friend of mine here in Delaware sent this information to me yesterday and in his email he said; “Here’s a possible topic for your blog. Just read the first paragraph of the attached Washington Post (AP) news story.  It’s not about adult entertainment or making videos, but I think it’s rather astonishing. Can you recall *ever* seeing a man referred to as the husband of another man on what amounts to the front page of all the major US news sources? I sure can’t”.

My friend is absolutely right.  Never before that he or I can recall, has the major networks, when reporting on the death of ANY gay man, quoted the word “HUSBAND”. 

For those of us ‘old farts’, this is simply amazing.  We’ve come a long way.  From the Stonewall riots when the brave drag queens took to the streets to assert their right to announce with PRIDE that they were gay, to today, when all major news wires now refer to the partner of a deceased gay man, as ‘husband’, WE’VE COME A LONG WAY BABY!

I only hope, that the young gay men in our community can apppreciate the efforts made by the older generation of gay men who worked so hard to get us to this point.  The young gay generation can now live openly, with pride in who they are.  Of course, in some areas of this country the fight continues and it is now up to the younger generation to pick up the banner and fight the fight until all of us in the GLBT community, where ever we may live, can live openly and with PRIDE!
